Scarborough Fellowships

The Center awards summer fellowships in honor of Claude Mood Scarborough to expand access to civil legal services in South Carolina. Fellowships are awarded to support summer clerkships at nonprofit and public interest organizations and law firms that serve low-income clients in qualifying rural locations.

Application requirements

Fellowships are open to rising 2L and 3L students in good academic standing for a maximum of 29 per week for ten weeks. Federal Work-Study eligibility is not required. Qualifying nonprofit and public interest organizations include but are not limited to: 

  • ACLU of South Carolina
  • Center for Heirs’ Property Preservation
  • Charleston Legal Access
  • Charleston Pro Bono Legal Services
  • Children’s Law Center at USC
  • Fathers and Families
  • NAACP of South Carolina
  • Lowcountry Legal Volunteers
  • One80 Place
  • Rainy Day Fund
  • Root & Rebound
  • Sistercare
  • South Carolina Access to Justice Commission
  • South Carolina Appleseed Legal Justice Center
  • South Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault
  • South Carolina Court Administration
  • South Carolina Legal Services
  • South Carolina Victim Assistance Network

Qualifying law firms are firms that serve low-income clients in the following counties: Abbeville, Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Cherokee, Chesterfield, Clarendon, Colleton, Dillon, Georgetown, Greenwood, Hampton, Lee, Marion, Marlboro, McCormick, Newberry, Oconee, Orangeburg, and Williamsburg. Law firms in towns with fewer than 5,000 residents in other counties also may be eligible.
